phil harwin

Phil specialises in green wood craft: tables, stools, spoons, spatulas, coat hooks, fan birds, and simple musical instruments.

I love using my hands to create beautiful objects. Working in green wood using traditional tools and techniques is both relaxing and satisfying knowing that I am sharing these age old skills with others.

Maker’s bio

Phil has travelled extensively and lived and worked abroad, enjoying and embracing cultural diversity across the world.

He has a passion for music which began when he first started playing in the school band, moving on to the county youth orchestra where he enjoyed playing and listening to a wide variety of classical music. Over the years he has composed, recorded, performed and collaborated on many projects, combining different styles. Music still plays an important part in his life.

On completion of a forestry award, he worked for several years as a tree surgeon and forester. He then attended Plymouth University where he gained a BSc (Hons) in Rural Resource Management. On completion of this degree, worked as an estate manager, and later as a project officer for the Silvanus Trust. In this role, he ran a community-based wood-recycling project, for which he set up a workshop producing a range of furniture which sold at outlets such as Duchy Nurseries and the Eden Project. This project ran very successfully and included participants from all walks of life. At the same time, he delivered an NVQ2 in Environmental Conservation.

In 2004 Phil started working for Cornwall College as a Programme Manager and Lecturer in Countryside Management and Wildlife and Conservation. He also helped set up the Greenwood Garden at the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust at Seale Hayne, working with a range of students with learning difficulties.

Over the last two decades, he has been involved in education, lecturing, teaching and training at different academic levels. He has set up, led, and taught programmes and projects to a wide variety of participants. He says that his passion for the outdoor life, working in the woods and being close to nature has been a constant source of inspiration and relaxation.

In 2015, Phil managed to combine two of his great passions, green woodwork and music when, through Greenwood Music CIC, he took on the management of a 40-acre ancient woodland and the delivery of Wellbeing in Nature workshops.
